Woodville Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Do Bats Hibernate?

Bats are the only mammals capable of flying. The fastest bat can sustain its flight at 99 miles per hour. There is about 1,200 species of bats and most of them are nocturnal. Since bats consume a lot of energy in hunting for food and shelter, they need a way to reenergize. During winter season, bats either migrate to a warmer place or hibernate with other bats.

What is Bats’ Hibernation?

The state where bats decrease activity and become inactive for months is called a state of torpor. This is not considered as a deep sleep. They store a lot of fat in their body in order to survive hibernation. They are dormant during the winter and they drop their heartbeats from 95 beats per minute to only 10 beats per minute. Their body temperature also drops and their metabolism becomes slower. They can be found with other clusters of bats on cave ceilings. Bat clusters keep them warm. At the end of winter, bats have lost about half of their weight. The hibernation will preserve their energy especially when food is scarce. By the month of December, when the temperature is below zero, you will no longer see any bats outside of your house. The peak month of bats’ hibernation is January. It doesn’t do anything and its body is at its weakest point. During hibernation, in mid-February, they try to look for available food and water. However, they won’t move far from their roost.

Not all bats hibernate. There are bats who migrate to warmer temperatures during the months of October. If the fat storage inside a bat’s body is large, they generally won’t go into hibernation. If the food is plenty and they are well-fed, they can be active whole year round. This can be seen in bats who live in tropical places. They generally moved from north to south. When summer is near, they can go to any place as the weather gets warmer.

It is believed that bats hibernate inside the walls of caves and mines. Small bats can form large colonies and they relax and conserve their energy in mines. However, due to the rise of urban areas, they can hibernate inside homes and buildings that can keep them warm during the winter season. They want a place that is dry, dark and has a consistent temperature. This can sound like your attic. It is possible to find big brown bats during the winter season in your house. If your house temperature changes dramatically, bats will just simply look for another house or attic where they can comfortable hibernate.

Bats inside your House

Bats are not pets and they should be considered as wild animals. They can smell bad and they leave a lot of droppings behind after they hibernate. They also leave stains on ceilings and can make a mess on painted walls. Bats also carry rabies and parasites. You should remove them as soon as possible whenever you see them inside your attics.
